Finding the Ocean Within
I was born in a city on the northern coast of Java, where the land meets the Java Sea. Yet, despite growing up so close to the coastline, my perspective was largely centred on the land. Like many people, I saw the ocean as part of the landscape rather than as something that shaped identity, culture, or the way communities live.
Only later did I begin to realise that perhaps the sea had always been quietly present in my story.
Looking back, I notice small threads that once seemed unrelated. My grandfather, on my mother’s side, worked for a state-owned company connected with Indonesia’s ports. Beyond his profession, he was also a talented blacksmith. One of my most treasured keepsakes is a handcrafted accessory he made and engraved with my name. At the time, I simply saw it as a gift from my grandfather. Today, I see it as a reminder of the craftsmanship, resilience, and quiet dedication that have been passed from one generation to the next.
As life unfolded, I found myself drawn towards the ocean in unexpected ways. Through study, research, conversations, and lived experiences, I began to understand that the sea is more than water. It is connected to our identities, our cultures, our livelihoods, and the choices we make about the future.
I sometimes wonder whether life leaves us small clues that only become visible when we look back. What once appeared to be separate moments now seem gently connected—not as proof that life was predetermined, but as reminders that our journeys often reveal their meaning over time.
Today, I no longer see the sea and the land as separate worlds. They shape one another, just as our experiences shape who we become. The coastline, where sea and land meet, has become a metaphor for my own journey—a place where different perspectives come together, creating new ways of understanding ourselves, our communities, and the world around us.
